My washer filled with water then broke.?

I left door open in washer to let blankets soak. That load went fine next load it filled with water but will not run. I twist and pulled the knob in all different spots; rinse, 14min, 6 min, ect. and nothing will not turn on and started washing or drain or anything. I tested the outlet it is working fine. I'm about to unscrew the back to take a look inside but I have no idea what im looking for, Can anyone help? Oh and btw have not enough money for repairman lol.
